We are being urged to look closely at [Jesus](/persons/jesus), who stands as both our messenger and our high priest. Think of it like this: [Moses](/persons/moses) was a faithful servant in [God](/persons/god)’s house, but Jesus is the builder and the Son, which puts Him in an entirely different category of significance. We are actually part of that house, provided we hold onto our confidence and keep our hope alive. But here is the catch: we have to be careful. History serves as a loud warning. When our ancestors had the chance to trust God, they let their hearts grow hard. They saw incredible things for forty years, yet they constantly wandered away, never understanding how things really work. Because they chose doubt and rebellion, they completely missed out on the rest God had promised them. It is a cautionary tale that we cannot afford to ignore today. This is why we need to look out for one another every single day. If we aren't careful, the deceitful nature of sin can harden our hearts, just like it did for the people who followed Moses. It is not just about the past; it is about our 'today.' We have the opportunity to share in everything Christ offers, but only if we stay firm and committed until the very end. The core of the issue is this: a deep, lasting 'rest' is still available for us, but it is not something you drift into by accident. It requires faith. God has been offering this rest since the beginning of the world, but it was blocked for those who refused to believe. [Joshua](/persons/joshua) didn't provide the ultimate finish line, because if he had, there wouldn't be talk of 'another day.' That day is now. We are invited to enter a Sabbath-like rest where we stop trying to earn our own way and start trusting God's finished work. Don't take this invitation lightly. The words we are hearing are not just ink on a page; they are alive, active, and sharper than any blade. They cut through the noise to expose what is really going on in our souls and our hidden intentions. Nothing is hidden from the one who is watching. Everything is completely exposed before Him, and ultimately, we are all going to have to give an account of our lives. ### Jesus Our Apostle and High Priest Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, set your focus on [Jesus](/persons/jesus), the apostle and high priest whom we confess. He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as [Moses](/persons/moses) was faithful in all [God](/persons/god)’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. And every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Now Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be spoken later. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we boast. ### Do Not Harden Your Hearts Therefore, as the [Holy Spirit](/persons/holy%20spirit) says:“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts,as you did in the rebellion,in the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers tested and tried Me,and for forty years saw My works. Therefore I was angry with that generation,and I said,‘Their hearts are always going astray,and they have not known My ways.’ So I swore on oath in My anger,‘They shall never enter My rest.’” ### The Peril of Unbelief See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God. But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end the assurance we had at first. As it has been said:“Today, if you hear His voice,do not harden your hearts,as you did in the rebellion.” For who were the ones who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was God angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed? So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter. ### The Sabbath Rest Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it. For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it. Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said:“So I swore on oath in My anger,‘They shall never enter My rest.’”
And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world. For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.” And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.” Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience, God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through [David](/persons/david) as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” For if [Joshua](/persons/joshua) had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience. ### The Living Word For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
