Tensions flared when Jesus’ disciples were spotted harvesting grain to satisfy their hunger while walking through fields. Local [Pharisees](/persons/pharisees) immediately confronted Jesus, questioning why he was allowing his followers to violate religious law. Jesus fired back with a sharp history lesson, reminding his critics that even King [David](/persons/david) broke the strict rules of the temple when he and his men were starving. He delivered a blunt assessment of their priorities, stating, *“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”* He ended the exchange by asserting his authority as Lord over the very day they claim to protect. The confrontation intensified just days later in the local synagogue. While the crowd watched closely to see if he would break protocol, Jesus encountered a man with a withered hand. Before acting, he put the religious leaders on the spot, asking if it was better to save a life or destroy it on a day of rest. When they refused to answer, Jesus reacted with visible anger and sorrow at their lack of compassion. Ignoring their objections, Jesus restored the man’s hand instantly. The act of mercy triggered an immediate and dangerous escalation. Rather than celebrating the miracle, the Pharisees left the building to initiate an alliance with the [Herodians](/persons/herodians), openly plotting to eliminate Jesus permanently. The situation has moved beyond a simple theological debate; it is now an active threat to his safety. One Sabbath [Jesus](/persons/jesus) was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain as they walked along. So the [Pharisees](/persons/pharisees) said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” Jesus replied, “Have you never read what [David](/persons/david) did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? During the high priesthood of [Abiathar](/persons/abiathar), he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.” Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” ### Jesus Heals on the Sabbath Once again Jesus entered the synagogue, and a man with a withered hand was there. In order to accuse Jesus, they were watching to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand up among us.” And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
But they were silent. Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored. At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting with the [Herodians](/persons/herodians) how they might kill Jesus.
