Seeking to undermine his growing influence, the [chief priests](/persons/chief%20priests), [scribes](/persons/scribes), and [elders](/persons/elders) launched a direct challenge, demanding to know who gave him the authority to act as he has recently. Jesus did not back down. Instead, he turned the tables with a strategic counter-question regarding the authority of [John](/persons/john) the Baptist. Caught in a political trap of their own making, the leaders admitted they didn't know the answer, prompting Jesus to remain silent regarding his own credentials. Not finished yet, Jesus addressed the crowd and the leaders directly with a scathing story. He described a vineyard owner who sent servants to collect his harvest, only to have them beaten and killed by greedy tenants. When the owner sent his own son, the tenants killed him as well, hoping to seize the inheritance. The subtext was clear to everyone present: the leaders are the wicked tenants who have rejected [God's](/persons/god) messengers and are now plotting against his son. Jesus ended his point by quoting ancient scripture about a rejected stone becoming the cornerstone. While the religious elite immediately recognized the parable was a direct attack on their leadership, they were forced to retreat. Fearful of a public outcry from the supporters who flocked to hear him, they backed away for now, leaving the crowd buzzing with the intensity of the confrontation. ### Jesus’ Authority Challenged After their return to Jerusalem, [Jesus](/persons/jesus) was walking in the temple courts, and the [chief priests](/persons/chief%20priests), [scribes](/persons/scribes), and [elders](/persons/elders) came up to Him. “By what authority are You doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave You the authority to do them?” “I will ask you one question,” Jesus replied, “and if you answer Me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. [John](/persons/john)’s baptism—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me!” They deliberated among themselves what they should answer: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will ask, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men’...” they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John truly was a prophet. So they answered, “We do not know.”
And Jesus replied, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.” ### The Parable of the Wicked Tenants Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a wine vat, and built a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey. At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized the servant, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. Then he sent them another servant, and they struck him over the head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another, and this one they killed.
He sent many others; some they beat and others they killed. Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they seized the son, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants, and will give the vineyard to others. Have you never read this Scripture:‘The stone the builders rejectedhas become the cornerstone. This is from the [Lord](/persons/god),and it is marvelous in our eyes’ ?” At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
