He urged his audience to remain dressed for service with their lamps lit, ready to open the door instantly. The core message is clear—those who are found alert and ready when he returns will receive an unexpected reversal of roles, where the master himself will serve them as guests of honor. The teaching took a sharp turn when [Peter](/persons/peter) asked if this advice was for his inner circle or the general public. Jesus responded by comparing leadership to a household manager. He highlighted a dangerous mindset: the temptation to act recklessly, mistreat others, and indulge in excess simply because the return of the master seems delayed. The consequences, he noted, are severe, ranging from heavy discipline for those who knew better, to lighter consequences for those who acted in ignorance. The overarching principle remains: to whom much is given, much is expected. Beyond preparation, the atmosphere is thickening with tension. Jesus shocked onlookers by declaring that his presence is not bringing a temporary truce, but rather a fire of division. He predicted that households would split, with families turning against one another over their allegiance to his message. This isn't a call to conflict, but an honest assessment of the friction his teachings create in a status-quo world. Turning to the crowds, he called out their hypocrisy. He noted that people are experts at reading the sky to predict the weather, yet they are completely blind to the 'signs of the times' unfolding right in front of them. He challenged them to stop waiting for a formal invitation to do the right thing, urging them to settle disputes with their adversaries before they are hauled into court and forced to pay every last penny. The day concluded with a somber call to repentance. Reports arrived regarding a violent incident involving [Galileans](/persons/galileans) and a tragic construction collapse at Siloam. When asked if these victims were worse people than the rest, Jesus rejected the assumption entirely. Instead, he flipped the narrative, warning the survivors that they are not exempt from tragedy—he stressed that everyone must repent now, or they will face a similar fate. The message is as blunt as it is urgent: time is running out, and no one is guaranteed tomorrow. ### Readiness at Any Hour Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning. Then you will be like servants waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds on watch when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve and will have them recline at the table, and he himself will come and wait on them. Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night and finds them alert, those servants will be blessed. But understand this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the [Son of Man](/persons/son%20of%20man) will come at an hour you do not expect.” “Lord,” said [Peter](/persons/peter), “are You addressing this parable to us, or to everyone else as well?” And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their portion at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming,’ and he begins to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not anticipate. Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows. But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded. ### Not Peace but Division I have come to ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. ” ### Interpreting the Present Time Then [Jesus](/persons/jesus) said to the crowds, “As soon as you see a cloud rising in the west, you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and that is what happens. And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It will be hot,’ and it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and sky. Why don’t you know how to interpret the present time? ### Reconciling with an Adversary And why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary while you are on your way to the magistrate. Otherwise, he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and the officer may throw you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny. ” ### A Call to Repentance At that time some of those present told Jesus about the [Galileans](/persons/galileans) whose blood [Pilate](/persons/pilate) had mixed with their sacrifices. To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this fate? No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
