Witnessing the suffering of the massive crowd—which included thousands of men, plus women and children—Jesus expressed concern that they would collapse from hunger if sent away empty-handed. Despite having only seven loaves of bread and a few small fish, a miraculous event occurred. After Jesus offered thanks and broke the food, it was distributed among the people. Reports from the scene confirm that everyone ate until they were fully satisfied, and the [disciples](/persons/disciples) managed to collect seven full basketfuls of leftovers, cementing the event as a major humanitarian relief effort. However, the atmosphere shifted quickly upon Jesus's arrival in a new region. A group of [Pharisees](/persons/pharisees) and [Sadducees](/persons/sadducees), usually at odds with one another, joined forces to confront him. They demanded that he produce a sign from heaven to prove his authority. Jesus did not mince words in his response. He criticized their hypocrisy, pointing out that while they are experts at predicting weather patterns by reading the sky, they are completely blind to the spiritual reality unfolding right in front of them. Dismissing their demand for a sign as coming from a 'wicked and adulterous generation,' Jesus made it clear that no further proof would be provided to them beyond the sign of [Jonah](/persons/jonah). He then abruptly ended the encounter and departed, leaving the religious leaders empty-handed as he moved on to continue his work. ### The Feeding of the Four Thousand Moving on from there, [Jesus](/persons/jesus) went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down. Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them. The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the [God of Israel](/persons/god%20of%20israel). Then Jesus called His [disciples](/persons/disciples) to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.” The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.” And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. A total of four thousand men were fed, in addition to women and children. After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. ### The Demand for a Sign Then the [Pharisees](/persons/pharisees) and [Sadducees](/persons/sadducees) came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of [Jonah](/persons/jonah).” Then He left them and went away.
