After attempting to retreat across the water to escape the suffocating crowds, he was interrupted by followers who seemed unprepared for the nomadic lifestyle he leads. He warned them plainly: being part of his inner circle means having no permanent home. The journey across the water turned into a life-or-death situation when a sudden, violent storm nearly swamped their boat. While his companions panicked, fearing for their lives, Jesus remained asleep. When they finally woke him, he calmed the wind and waves with a single command, leaving his team shaken and questioning exactly what kind of person he could be to command the elements themselves. Upon reaching the other side, the situation took a dark turn. He was met by two men living among the tombs, both severely disturbed and dangerous. In a bizarre turn of events, the forces controlling these men begged to be sent into a nearby herd of pigs. When Jesus granted the request, the entire herd stampeded into the water. Instead of being grateful for the restoration of the men, the local townspeople were terrified by the financial loss and the sheer power on display, begging Jesus to leave their region immediately. Back in his home territory, the momentum continued. A group of men went to extraordinary lengths to get their paralyzed friend to Jesus. After witnessing their clear faith, Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven. This triggered immediate outrage from religious leaders present, who accused him of blasphemy. Jesus didn't back down, asking if it was harder to forgive sins or to heal a body. To settle the debate, he told the man to pick up his mat and walk. The man did exactly that, leaving the crowd stunned and publicly glorifying God for the authority they had just witnessed. ### The Cost of Discipleship When [Jesus](/persons/jesus) saw a large crowd around Him, He gave orders to cross to the other side of the sea. And one of the [scribes](/persons/scribes) came to Him and said, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” Another of His [disciples](/persons/disciples) requested, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” ### Jesus Calms the Storm When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was engulfed by the waves; but Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” “You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was perfectly calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!” ### The Demons and the Pigs When Jesus arrived on the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, He was met by two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. “What do You want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?” In the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding. So the demons begged Jesus, “If You drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” “Go!” He told them. So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the waters. Those tending the pigs ran off into the town and reported all this, including the account of the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their region. ### Jesus Heals a Paralytic Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own town. Just then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.” On seeing this, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming!” But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Why do you harbor evil in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk?’ But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” Then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go home.” And the man got up and went home. When the crowds saw this, they were filled with awe and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
