It is like trying to fix a friend’s blurry vision while you are wearing a blindfold. The advice here is simple: clean up your own act first. Once you have dealt with your own shortcomings, you will actually be in a position to help someone else. Just remember to be careful—don't waste your energy trying to share deep truths with people who are only going to mock them and tear you apart. If you feel like you are missing something, start asking. The rule is simple: if you ask, you get; if you search, you find; if you knock, the door opens. Think about it like a parent and a child. Even with all our flaws, we still want to give our kids bread instead of rocks. If we can figure out how to be good to our own families, you can be sure that a loving Creator wants to give you the best things possible. It all comes back to the Golden Rule: treat people exactly how you would want them to treat you. Life is a lot like choosing which path to walk. The easy road is crowded, flashy, and leads nowhere good. The right road is narrow and quiet, and honestly, not many people take it. Keep an eye out for people who talk a big game but have nothing to show for it. Just like you can tell what kind of tree you have by looking at the fruit it drops, you can tell what kind of person someone is by looking at their actions, not their empty promises. The ultimate test for all of us is the storm. Everyone hears these lessons, but the people who actually act on them are like someone building a house on solid rock. When the bad weather hits—and it will—that house stays standing. Everyone else is just building on sand, and the moment life gets difficult, the whole thing falls apart. The crowds watching this speaker are stunned. They have heard plenty of preachers and politicians before, but this is different. He is not just reciting old rules; he is speaking with a weight and authority that feels like the truth finally cutting through the noise. ### Judging Others “Do not judge, or you will be judged. For with the same judgment you pronounce, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces. ### Ask, Seek, Knock Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the [Prophets](/persons/prophets). ### The Narrow Gate Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it. ### A Tree and Its Fruit Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, by their fruit you will recognize them. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘[Lord](/persons/god), Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’ ### The House on the Rock Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!” ### The Authority of [Jesus](/persons/jesus) When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their [scribes](/persons/scribes).
