[Joseph of Arimathea](/persons/joseph%20of%20arimathea), a man who had long followed Jesus in secret due to the intense pressure from local authorities, has successfully petitioned the governor for permission to claim the body. Joseph was not acting alone. He was joined by [Nicodemus](/persons/nicodemus), another figure known for his cautious, late-night meetings with Jesus in the past. Together, the two arrived with a substantial amount of expensive burial spices—roughly seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes—signaling a commitment to honor Jesus according to traditional burial rites despite the danger of such an association. The pair prepared the body using linen cloths and the heavy supply of spices, working with a sense of urgency. The local authorities were pushing to clear the scene before the Jewish day of Preparation reached its deadline, making the timing of these final acts critical. They located a nearby, unused tomb situated within a quiet garden close to the execution site. Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
