Religious leaders are aggressively targeting him, not only for his actions but for his increasingly bold claims regarding his identity. During a heated exchange, Jesus stood firm against his critics. He dropped a bombshell by declaring that [God](/persons/god)—his Father—is constantly at work, and that he is simply acting in partnership with Him. This assertion of being equal with God has pushed the opposition to a boiling point, with many now actively plotting to remove him. In a revealing follow-up, Jesus explained that his ministry is entirely synchronized with the Father’s will. He insisted that he does not act independently, but mirrors exactly what he sees his Father doing. He spoke of a deep, authoritative bond, claiming that the Father has entrusted him with the power to give life to the dead and the authority to judge all people. Perhaps most shocking to the crowd was his claim regarding the future. He announced that a time is coming when even those in their graves will hear his voice. He stated that everyone will eventually face a final reckoning based on their lives, and he is the one appointed to oversee that transition. As the situation develops, Jesus remains unfazed by the threat of violence. He maintains that his judgment is perfectly fair because he is not acting on personal ambition, but is strictly following the mission given to him by the One who sent him. Now because [Jesus](/persons/jesus) was doing these things on the Sabbath, the [Jews](/persons/jews) began to persecute Him. But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.” Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling [God](/persons/god) His own Father, making Himself equal with God. So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does. The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes. Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself. And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
