Following an intense confrontation, the council members were pushed to a breaking point, physically attacking [Stephen](/persons/stephen) as he stood his ground. Witnesses say that even in his final moments, Stephen remained eerily calm, claiming he could see the heavens open and a vision of divine authority above him. The situation spiraled into a riot quickly. The mob seized Stephen, dragging him outside the city gates to carry out a brutal execution. As they pelted him with stones, a young man named [Saul](/persons/saul) stood nearby, holding the coats of the attackers and clearly supporting the violence. Stephen’s final words were a plea for the [Lord](/persons/god) to receive his spirit and a shocking request for mercy for those killing him, before he collapsed and died. In the immediate aftermath, Saul has become a central figure in a widespread campaign to dismantle the religious group Stephen belonged to. A wave of persecution has crashed over the city, forcing believers to flee for their lives into the surrounding regions. Saul is reportedly moving house-to-house, tearing families apart and dragging people off to prison in what is being described as a systematic effort to silence the movement permanently. ### The Stoning of [Stephen](/persons/stephen) On hearing this, the members of the [Sanhedrin](/persons/sanhedrin) were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of [God](/persons/god) and [Jesus](/persons/jesus) standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him. They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named [Saul](/persons/saul). While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep. ### Saul Persecutes the Church And Saul was there, giving approval to Stephen’s death.
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the [apostles](/persons/apostles) were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. God-fearing men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him. But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.
