During a high-stakes meeting, he delivered a message so challenging that a significant number of his followers have officially cut ties and left the movement. The rift began when Jesus spoke about spiritual life in terms that many found difficult to grasp. Rather than smoothing things over, he doubled down, noting that some in the crowd simply do not believe. The reaction was immediate: a mass exodus of people who had been following him until now decided they had reached their limit. Following the departure of the crowd, Jesus turned to his closest group of [twelve](/persons/twelve) loyalists. He asked them directly if they, too, were planning on leaving. It was a moment of stark vulnerability for the movement. [Simon Peter](/persons/peter) stood up and offered a firm response, questioning where they would even go if they left, given that Jesus holds the keys to real, lasting life. He solidified their position, stating that they recognize Jesus as the Holy One sent by [God](/persons/god). Despite the display of loyalty, the atmosphere remains heavy with suspicion. Jesus dropped a bombshell during the conversation, revealing that even within this small, hand-picked group of twelve, there is a mole. He specifically pointed to Judas Iscariot, confirming that the person set to betray him is sitting right at the table. ### Many Disciples Turn Back [Jesus](/persons/jesus) said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. On hearing it, many of His [disciples](/persons/disciples) said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?” Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you? Then what will happen if you see the [Son of Man](/persons/son%20of%20man) ascend to where He was before? The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. However, there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.) Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.” From that time on many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him. ### Peter’s Confession of Faith So Jesus asked the [Twelve](/persons/twelve), “Do you want to leave too?” [Simon Peter](/persons/peter) replied, “[Lord](/persons/god), to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God. ” Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.
