In a series of confrontational events, the debate over how to properly observe the Sabbath has moved from the grainfields to the synagogue, with the religious authorities watching His every move to find cause for an arrest. The friction began when Jesus' followers, hungry after walking through fields, plucked grain to eat. When critics accused them of breaking Sabbath work laws, Jesus pushed back, citing the history of King [David](/persons/david), who famously ate consecrated bread when he was hungry. Jesus dropped a bombshell claim, stating that something greater than the local temple is present and that He, as the 'Son of Man,' is actually the authority behind the Sabbath laws. The situation escalated immediately afterward in a local synagogue. A man with a withered hand stood in the crowd, and the critics dared Jesus to heal him, hoping to catch Him in a technical violation of the law. Jesus didn't hesitate. He pointed out the obvious hypocrisy of their logic, noting that they wouldn't leave a sheep to suffer in a pit just because it was the Sabbath. He then restored the man’s hand to full health right in front of them. Instead of celebrating the healing, the opposition reached a breaking point. Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” ### The Lord of the Sabbath At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His [disciples](/persons/disciples) were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. When the [Pharisees](/persons/pharisees) saw this, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” Jesus replied, “Have you not read what [David](/persons/david) did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for them to eat, but only for the priests. Or haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and yet are innocent? But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If only you had known the meaning of ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” ### Jesus Heals on the Sabbath Moving on from there, Jesus entered their synagogue, and a man with a withered hand was there. In order to accuse Jesus, they asked Him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” Then Jesus said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored to full use, just like the other. But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
